A baking paper alternative for cooking and baking is often searched because the paper cannot be reused often or recycled again. Therefore, many people are looking for substitutes to replace the baking paper.
You can use the baking paper two to four times until you have to throw it away into the trash. It also happens from time to time, when baking something on high temperature, the paper is history just after one use.
Different Forms of Baking Paper

Baking paper comes in two different forms. The first version is coated with silicone and has the advantage to last longer. However, it is very environmental unfriendly as the silicone does not break down (same as plastic).
The other version of the baking paper is coated with a chromium salt fat formula called Quilon. It is cheap, but it only lasts for one or a maximum of two uses. Also, any baking over 190 C (370 F) degrees for more than 20 minutes will dissolve the paper entirely.
TIP: If you still like to use the traditional baking paper, please buy one which is compostable and unbleached – see link below for our recommendation:
THE BEST BAKING PAPER ALTERNATIVE
The baking sheet is by far the best alternative. You can grease the sheet with healthy oils like coconut oil, olive oil, or other vegan fats. On top of the oil, add flour or bread crumbs for the food not to stick on the baking sheet. Some kinds of foods, such as cookies or pizza, do not even need greasing.
SILICONE BAKING MATS
The baking mats are the newest insider trend in the baking industry. Up to 800 to 1000 times, the mats are usable until they need to be retired. The Teflon and glass fibers coated mats are 200 C degrees heat resistant for baking.
Indeed, our top favorite baking sheet alternative as you can use it many times, and it is a good value for little money. Pay attention that the baking mats made out of silicone are BPA and PFOA free.
Not only can the baking mats withstand heat, but the material also is suitable for use inside the freezer. What we like the most, there is no need for flour as the mats are very flexible to roll out, knead any kind of dough.
PERMANENT TEFLON BAKING SHEET FOILS
At first sight, the permanent baking sheets foil looks like the same as regular baking sheets. However, they are made out of silicone, and you can reuse them up to 1000 times. As the sheets are tasteless and odorless, they are perfect for every baking purpose. Most of the versions are dishwasher friendly, or you can easily clean them with a regular kitchen sponge.
ALUMINUM FOIL SHEETS
This baking paper alternative is not our favorite, but should not miss here on the list. Besides the toxic production process of the foil, it also has some danger to infiltrate food once the aluminum coating is being damaged by salty food.
We only recommend to use it as a last emergency solution if the baking paper (alternative) is empty. The use of aluminum foil in the oven is relatively harmless as the temperature will not damage the wafer-thin foil. But, please remember my words about the salt attacking the coating; keep this in mind!
GREASEPROOF PAPER (Non-Stick)
The greaseproof paper is very thin and a more healthy alternative as regular baking paper. Why? Because greaseproof does not contain any silicone and plasticizes.
You need to apply butter or oil on the paper before baking to prevent sticking. It is a very cheap alternative to keep the oven clean from grease.
Pizza & Baking Stone
The stones are made out of various materials such as fireclay or cordierite. They tolerate very high temperatures in the oven and are best for pizza or bread dough. One disadvantage comes with the stones; they tend to take a long time to heat up.
Therefore, you need to preheat the oven. When baking bread or pizza, the stone ensures an even bottom heat, which is hard to archive with baking sheets.
MORE USEFUL TIPS
Here are a few more tips to make your life a little bit easier.
- Food sticking: Sometimes, with flour, the problems occur that the food sticks to the baking form. Solution: flip the baking form over, lay the baking paper around the form, fold the edges, and smooth it out. Turn around the form, put the baking paper in, and add the dough. No need to grease the form, and it will not stick anymore.
- Sandwich maker stays clean: If you like to make sandwiches, but hate cleaning the sandwich maker afterward, put baking paper on both sides (can be reused several times)
- Quick greasing: Put the form a short time in the oven. The butter or fat will melt quicker, and brushing the grease becomes easier.
