THE ORIGIN OF THE MOJITO COCKTAIL
The mojito originated in Cuba, but some critics say that the exact origin of this classic is not 100% known. In like manner, the origin of the name Mojito is also quite controversial as the origin. In either case, the name Mojito is widely used since the early 20th century and has never been adjusted in any way.
WHAT KIND OF RUM SHOULD YOU CHOOSE
Without a doubt, your mojito recipe needs real rum from Cuba to archive its original taste. The Cuban Rum should be white and not stored in oak barrels which makes it have a more brownish color.
In general, you can also opt to use other great rums from the Caribbean like from Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic. Although, they have a slightly unique taste style depending on the origin country, at the end, your own taste liking matters the most.
The original Cuban Rum is very light in its taste which makes it the number one choice above all the other rums out there.
HOW MUCH MINT SHOULD YOU ADD
In short, not too much nor too little should be added into the cocktail. As a general guideline, around 5 to 8 mint leaves per glass are sufficient for the best blending taste. Please keep in mind to always use fresh ones, as older ones will not give the intense flavor needed.
LIME VS. LEMON
Limes, in general, are much more sour as lemons are. As the mojito blend thrives on a sour, minty, and sweet taste, I would personally not recommend not using lemons.
If you are unlucky and got some sweeter lemons, the combination with sugar and lemon will spoil the whole taste of the cocktail. Remember, it should be a refreshing taste and not a soda-like taste
- 5 cl white rum
- 2 teaspoons of white sugar cane
- 1 fresh lime
- 10 cl of sparkling water
- 1 fresh branch of mint (about 8 leaves)
- 5 Cracked Ice Cubes
Firstly, pour the sugar, mint and four pieces of sliced lime into a cocktail or whiskey glass. Next, crush the ingredients with a wooden stick very good as the sugar should dissolve and blend into the aroma of the mint and lime juice. Now add the rum on top and let the mixture rest for about 20 seconds before adding the ice. Finally, fill the glass with cold sparkling water and garnish with a slice of lime and some mint.
You can substitute the following:
- Instead of fresh lime, use fresh lime juice from the bottle
- If no sugar cane is available, you can use brown sugar or sugar syrup instead
- Also, regular iced cubes can be used instead of crushed cubes.
