No need to a pay expensive bill at a car detail shop, when you can do it by yourself. It might sound easy, a piece of cake, but don’t be fooled as professionals have many hidden tricks to make the car shine. You might do an ok job, but we tell you of how to do exterior car cleaning like the pro’s do it:
1. THE RIGHT TOOLS ARE A MUST
Having the correct tools, to begin with, can give a clue if the car will shine or wither afterwards. If you only think to start with one bucket and one sponge, an efficient cleanness of the car is very difficult to reach. Our Expert recommends having TWO water buckets on standby. One is for the clean water and the other one for the rinsing water to be collected during the car cleaning process.
If only one bucket is used, dirt particles can attach to the sponge or microfiber cloth and scratch the car paint. I am sure that this is not the purpose during the car detailing to add more scratches to it. Please prepare the following accessories prior to starting the car detailing:
- 2 Buckets of Water
- A good car sponge or special car brush for car detailing
- Several microfiber cloths
- Car shampoo
- Wheel Rim Cleaner
- Glass Cleaner
- Newspaper or Paper Towel
- Maybe Insect Cleaner Spray (during summer)
- Car Coat Polish & Sealer
- Soft Brush (for Rims)
TIP 1: USE ONLY LIGHT COLORED BUCKETS AS YOU CAN SEE THE DIRT LEVEL OF THE WATER BETTER. IT TELLS WHEN TO RENEW THE WATER
2. START TO REMOVE THE COARSE DIRT FIRST
Unquestionably, some more things are needed besides the basic cleaning equipment. Of course, a good car shampoo from a reliable brand is a must. The difference between cheap and the bit more expensive ones is that it will not attack the car wax layer. In addition, get a couple of good quality microfiber cloths and a washing glove to reach even very difficult corners such as the radiator area or spoiler grills.
A Pre-Wash is highly recommend to wash off the coarse dirt first. Basically, either a garden hose/water-bucket with an old sponge would do the job well. As a matter of fact, if you would start with a clean microfiber cloth right away, it will be dirty in no time. Just a few wipes and everything becomes black.
TIP 2: THE CAR WAX LAYER PROTECTS THE CAR LONGER FROM DIRT
3. START THE DETAILING/WASHING PROCESS
Add some shampoo into the bucket that is reserved for the clean water. For the purpose of having a lot of foam, mix the shampoo and water by hand inside the bucket. Make sure, that a lot of foam should develop. If this is not the case, add more shampoo into the water bucket.
To begin with, the car detailing, use the microfiber glove or sponge and apply the shampoo all over the car. Now either use a pressure cleaner or garden hose to rinse off all the shampoo from the vehicle. Afterward, use a clean and dry microfiber cloth to dry-clean the entire body of the car. As the cloth might gets wet pretty quickly, several are of use to cover the entire car.
4. CLEAN THE CAR TIRE RIMS
The tire rims do collect a lot of break dust and grime due to using the breaks very frequently while driving. The best method to get rid of this stubborn dirt is to spray with a special wheel rim cleaner and let it sit for a minute. Use any soft brush to evenly spread the cleaner onto all the areas of the rim. Now start In detail to clean all the rims by using a very old cloth. At the final step, dry clean all the rims with a new microfiber cloth (use only for rims). Bingo, the sparkling shiny metal looks like a almighty mirror: Spotless Clean.
5. CLEAN ALL THE WINDOWS
A very old trick from granny is to use newspaper for cleaning the windows. In case you still have some old ones lying around, it is good to utilize them. Obviously, we can apply the same technique to do home windows cleaning as well. Spray the glass cleaner on the car window, but this time use one sheet of newspaper, instead of a paper towel, to dry everything. Start from top to bottom and change the newspaper sheets frequently once they get soaking wet. Continue until all the windows are done and streak-free. Of course, if no newspaper is handy, a regular kitchen paper towel is suitable as well.
6. CAR WAX & POLISH
Once successfully washed and dried the car, it is time to add the car wax and polish onto the car body. Put some wax/polish on a piece of cloth and apply a very thin but even coat in order for not missing any spots. The purpose of using this technique is to make sure that the whole car is well covered with the wax. To point out, the wax/polish must completely protect the car body against environmental influences.
Once the wax/polish product is evenly applied, it is time to use a premium microfiber towel to buff off all the wax. Do not apply the wax all over the car at once, as it will dry off too quickly before you even reach all the areas for buffing. The best is to start with the hood, once finished make your way around the vehicle until everything is covered.
TIP: DO NOT USE TOO MUCH POLISH, LESS IS BETTER
7. CLEAN THE HEADLIGHTS TO MAKE THEM BRIGHT AGAIN
Without a doubt, the headlights of a car are very important while driving during night times. Over time, the plastic cover of the light bulbs will get blurry. With this in mind, having once again bright and shiny headlights does increase the safety of all passengers by tenfold. How to do it? Very simply:
First, mask off the edges of the lights using masking tape which is mainly used for wall painting purposes. Once done, you are now going to buff the headlights. No worries, a regular toothpaste from the bathroom will help out. The toothpaste contains very small pieces of silicon which help to buff the light cover very well.
Apply a small amount of toothpaste on a clean cloth and apply it in a circular motion onto the headlights. Sooner or later you will see some improvement as the blurriness will gradually disappear. Once satisfied with the result, wipe off the remaining toothpaste.
8. DO NOT FORGET TO CLEAN THE ENGINE
By and large, the engine is the most overlooked part of the car when it comes to cleaning. The most efficient way to clean the engine is by using a pressure cleaner. A gentle approach is a must as you need to pay attention not to damage any sensible engine tubes.
As we live in a time where all of us should think green, I do not advocate to do this at home. As the oil goes straight into the environment, it will pollute the ground/soil in your neighborhood. Please go to any nearby self car wash place to clean the engine as they have special basins to collect and recycle the oil.
All in all, from start to finish a good 2-3 hours of time is needed to get the car detailing done. Needless to say, that you also should clean the interior of the car. Take the case if unexpected company comes over to visit or you need to give a ride to a friend as of a sudden. It is very embarrassing to have a shiny car on the outside, but the inside looks not so welcoming, right?
